I am pleased as punch to share with you this reissue of a very special album that has been out of print for the better part of a decade. Docile is a solo piano suite recorded May 6, 2007, originally released on 10” vinyl. It is a collection of compositions that is at once undeniably stirring and resonant. I’m not alone in my thinking either. Two out of the three top songs from Broderick’s Spotify repertoire are from Docile.
What might otherwise be regarded as a set of creative limitations becomes an asset in Broderick’s hands: his blanket use of the sustain pedal becomes a part of his compositional language, lending atmospheric weight to the lapping, undulating arpeggios of ‘Return’, and the Nyman-esque ‘Query. On this release Broderick seems able to craft the most graceful, plaintive music as if plucked from the air… ESSENTIAL PURCHASE!
